Instagram Mission in Copenhagen

Ah, Copenhaga.

No meu último fim-de-semana, aventurei-me sozinha numa missão de Instagram. O objectivo?

How time flies. Three months ago, there I was, in the midst of snow and short daytimes. Now, I look back with nostalgia of the time I spent in a city so evolved, organised, clean and safe. Yup, that's Scandinavia for you.

On my last weekend, I ventured alone on an Instagram mission. The goal? To find the non-touristic parts of town. The ones that only the locals know. So grab a paper and pen (or open your notes on your iPhone), and take notes!

I'll leave you with the images and a video of the places I went.

The Good & The Bad: 10 coffee shops in CPH

[EN]: The ones who know me, know that coffee shops are my happy place. This love and appreciation for good quality coffee combined with a thoughtful space design and decor started in Paris – doesn't everything start there, tho?

It was in the City of Light that I became aware that these small places where people met and chatted over a hot cup of ccino sitting on second-hand restored chairs and looking over hustling streets thru big glass windows, were the places to be in.

It's not only the latte with soy milk you drink or the gluten-free carrot cake you eat. It's the environment and the people you're with that make these moments special. It's the little boards hanging with inspirational quotes or the design magazines available to look at. It's the concentrated barista preparing a filter coffee and the artsy photographer editing pictures on his Mac.

In Copenhagen, I had a huge list of coffee shops I wanted to experience. Though living far away from the center (10 minutes by train), it wasn't always my priority to go there after work. Nevertheless, in three months I went to 10 different coffee shops and those are the ones who matter – at least for the sake of this post.

So here they are, with my personal review on their menu and ambiance.

The good: Great selection of coffee drinks. The Swedish cinnamon roll is amazing. Hygge all around with big comfy leather sofas and dimmed lighting. Right in the city center.

The bad: Wifi not always great. Swedish cinnamon rolls not always available. 9€ for an almond cappuccino and a piece of cake – expensive!

O bom: Café, sumos de vegetais e shots de gengibre ótimos. Baristas giros. Ambiente jovem e música do momento.

The good: Great coffee, veggie juices and ginger shots. Good-looking baristas. Cool environment and hip music.

The bad: Music can be too loud to study.

The good: Grød has an amazing selection of porridge. The toppings are organic and there are a big selection – from fresh to dried fruit, to nuts to sweet sauces.
Resso's blend is mild – which I like.

The bad: Grød – Big bowls, too much to eat. Porridge too dry and not creamy as like better.
Resso – not latte art (tho I know I ordered with oat milk and it doesn't have a thick consistency to do so).

The good: Great selection of brunch options. Healthy choices. Great price (€13 for 7 pieces – ideal to share).

The bad: Very crowded on Sunday mornings.

O mau: Nada a apontar.

The good: The best blend in town. Bitter espressos, great to get the morning started. A lot of baristas, so not too long waiting for your order.

The bad: Nothing.

The good: The best avocado toast in town. Great big windows with natural lighting coming thru. Big space decorated with light colors.

The bad: No wifi. No vegan milk.

The good: Great avocado and egg toast. It has wifi and power outlets – for a social media break.

The bad: Terrible matcha latte – tasted too of the almond milk, and none of the matcha I paid for.

The good: THE BEST cinnamon swirl in town.

The bad: The space is no big deal, looks like a food court. Soy milk has no flavour at all.

The good: Organic matcha with a mild taste. Nice big servings. Quite a lot of options for vegan milk – soy, almond, cashew,... Amazing Scandi environment – light colors and zen mood. Wifi.

The bad: Quite expensive for matcha and milk (€7).

Lately on the gram

[EN]: This weekend was definitely really special: added to the fact that it shined gloriously in the Danish capital, Diogo came to visit! It was three days where I got to show him the whole city.

We started in Nyhavn – the harbour with the coloured houses – filled with people doing photosynthesis, we ate a waffle on a stick dipped in dark chocolate, had coffee at concept coffee houses – Atelier Septembre and The Coffee Collective –, had lunch at amazing food markets – at Papirøen, an alternative food market with all kinds of food (there you can find sushi, Brasilian barbecue and even vegan plates) and at Torvehallerne, a fancy market with gourmet food and a flower market.
It was at the first one where we tried the typical pulled pork sandwich with barbeque sauce and pickles and, at the second one, we had the traditional smørrebrød or dark bread sandwich topped with mini shrimps and smoked salmon – a delicacy.

We couldn't miss the perfect combo: cappuccinos and the typical danish cinnamon swirl (which is crisp and flat, unlike the Swedish version which is more like a cinnamon soft cake). We had this at Lagkagehuset, a bakery that one can find on every corner here.

Next, I could not show him the beautiful Botanical Garden and its greenhouse – where my hair got all curled up and the lenses got foggy, a non-blogger moment, I'll tell ya! We strolled through Nørrebro, a multiethnic neighbourhood, to find this super Instagrammable park with lines all drawn on the floor (and, apparently, where they shot a campaign for some car).

The long weekend (we walked 10k per day, to be exact) ended at the Little Mermaid Statue. This is based on the novel of the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen and a must!

Below, you can find the vlog from this weekend! Don't forget to like, subscribe and comment! I'm really looking forward to hearing some constructive criticism so I can improve these videos that I love so much to film and edit.

A TOP PROJECT

Aliado a isto, tenho grandes novidades.

[EN]: Scrolling down my Instagram, one might believe I'm always travelling. And the truth is, I mostly am. Since I'm living in the north of Europe, most of the capital cities are closer to me, so it gives me chance to book cheaper flights and spontaneous weekend getaways. And the fact that I'm being paid for this internship makes rethink the way I use my money: part of it goes to bus rides and grocery shopping, another goes into my personal savings, and the other goes into experiences.

From what I've been learning in these months that I've been more independent is that travelling makes me so much more accomplished than buying a new pair of jeans or a new shade of a lipstick. It's true that wearing a new piece of clothing or makeup can make you feel more confident, but the feel you get when you travel and discover a whole new world is incomparable.

Linked to this fact, I've got some big news. Us travellers or everyday digital wanderers have their own source of inspiration. Mine comes from Instagram – but that's no surprise. More specifically from travelling accounts. The one I love the most and found to be truly professional is TOPphotos. There are a lot of different accounts for the most known cities/capitals and countries, and even ones targeted for restaurants.

I've been featured in TOPParisResto and, most recently, TOPLondonPhoto. In this last one got over 25k likes (here), which is something I would never dream a photo of mine would get. The exposure I got on my account was huge and the positive feedback is heartwarming.

Meanwhile, I was speaking to Inês Brandling. As you're foreigner you might not know her, but she owns one of the most successful food accounts in Lisbon and manages TOPGermanyPhoto, TOPLisbonPhoto, TOPUKPhoto and even the TOPIcelandPhoto. She's unbeatable!

In between DMs, she introduced me to the owner of the TOP accounts – Patrick Colpron – who created this Instagram emporium of destination and gastronomy accounts – and for me, a god!

So, the fearless me reached Patrick by email and proposed to manage an unexisting account – TOPCopenhagenPhotos – explaining I was coming there to live for three months and would love to see what places I could visit.

And he said yes!

So that's the big news. I'm a proud TOP Community Manager and every day I feature the best photos of the Danish capital.

It's so amazing to be a part of a huge community of people who love photography and travelling. We get to share amazing content from other travellers (or ourselves) and discover new places pretty much everywhere around the world!

Postcards from CPH

E o nome dela... Inês! Coincidência? Acho que não. Era suposto acontecer!

[EN]: Hejsä! This post comes directly from the heart of Denmark – Copenhagen. That's right, one more place to add to the list of places I've lived in. And this one is quite special, it's where my half sister lives and I'm delighted to be living with her and spending more time with her, instead of just once a year.

The first weekend in town was spent just strolling around with a new friend I met on the airplane coming over here. And her name... Inês! Coincidence? I don't think so. It was meant to be!

First things first: brunch! You know how devoted I am to Instagram. That is where I find all my inspirations for photos, outfits, travels and, of course, food. With a quick search on "places", I found 10 new coffee shops I NEED to go and places to shoot. Here, in Copenhagen, they're big on brunch. There are tons of locations, and the first one we chose was MAD & KAFFE (which literally translates to 'food & coffee', pretty to the point). Only after getting there and having to wait one hour in the cold to get a table, was that I discovered it was THE place to brunch – but it so worth the wait!

At MAD & KAFFE there were three types of brunch menus: one where you could choose 3 pieces, other to choose 5 and one other to choose 7 – we chose this last one and shared it. These 7 pieces were completely up to us to choose from a big list, so we got exactly what we wanted, instead of leaving those sausages that everyone gets and nobody eats.

The presentation was impeccable: in a wooden board, we were presented with a, what I like to call, perfect Instagrammable brunch. Ok, we got more than we could handle, but it all looked so appealing and, indeed, tasty. We ordered a portion of soy blackberry yoghurt, two halves of avocado drizzled with olive oil and chilli flakes, scrambled eggs with mushrooms, porridge with dried banana slices, caramel sauce and chocolate chips – this was heavenly, the oats were so hydrated that it tasted like a real pudding –, a portion of smoked salmon and a bread basket. To follow it, she got an apple, carrot and ginger juice and I got an almond cappuccino, of course.

Next, we headed our way to Nyhavn (pronounced 'nuhaun' and menaing "new harbour") with the (hole) help of Google Maps. It took us 40 minutes and a whole lot of freezing wind blowing in our faces.

If you want to go somewhere touristic in CPH, this is the place. In fact, it's this danish city's selling point.

What Inês told me was that, back in the day, each house was painted accordingly to the richness of its owner. So if the house was painted in dark blue, you could tell the warehouse   owner had money; if painted in orange, then it would suggest they had little money. And the in between colours would adjust themselves according to this pattern.

In those 400 metres that make the harbour, there are loads of typical restaurants, bars and coffeeshops. Two years ago I couldn't resist trying this waffle on a stick, and when I saw it, this time, I had to have the exact same one: drizzled in dark chocolate and covered in coconut flakes.

After it, we went up to the roof of Illum – something similar to the Galleries Lafayette in Paris – with a view over the main CPH shopping street and square – Amagertorv.

We went by the Marble Church – which part of the marble used in its construction came from Portugal!

Then, we crossed the square in front of the Church where we could find the Palace of Amalienborg. This is the oficial winter residence of the danish royal family.

On the other side of the river, it's the hipster side of Copenhagen – Christiania. Since the sun had already set, we decided to just pass by their Village Underground – PapirHallen (or Paper Island). It's here that exists a huge alternative-design food market (to our misfortunate, it was closed) and a contemporary art museum – the Copenhagen Contemporary.

Here we attended three different expositions, and it was the first one that impressed me the most. It screened a film where the American band The National performed their three-and-a-half minute ballad  "Sorrow" on repeat for six hours. With this, the Icelandic artist (name below) wanted to show how a melody could change due to fatigue. It is also interesting to enter the display room and try to guess how many hours they were into it. When we got there, the musicians were all sweaty and the singer was mumbling words, so we figured it would've been one of the last hours.

Hello, Copenhagen! (photo diary)

I know, it has been over a month since I went to Copenhagen to visit my sister and my travel post is only coming out now... Sorry! Life got in the way (or I was really lazy about it). Oh well, without further ado, here's my travel photo diary!
