Camden Town takes it all

[EN]: On our last day in London, we planned to go see the change of guards at the Buckingham Palace, then head to the main alternative places – the colourful Neal's Yard and, of course, the lively Camden Market.

As I showed on my vlog (scroll down to watch it), we left our luggage at Victoria Coach Station, had breakfast at Café Nero and walked to the beautiful Buckingham. I think it's every other day, at 11 o'clock, that the change of guards takes place. It's quite a show, with many different guards dressed up in grey or red, walking with guns or riding a horse, and even playing the trumpets. It's an event that gathers quite a lot of people and that lasts about 45 minutes.

Long our way, I couldn't stop noticing how the Big Ben or the London Eye always kept peeking on us. It's that little reminder that we were truly in London.

Next stop was the secret place I only found it existed through Instagram – Neal's Yard. It's truly a hidden gem in one of the Seven Dials. It's here where they "hide" the Neal's Yard Remedies – an organic skin care boutique –, a raw/vegetarian restaurant and a coffee shop. Unfortunately, we were between meals so we just peeked, snapped and went back.

Ah, Convent Garden!

Ah, Convent Garden! What a disappointment. Honestly, I was expecting it to be so much more 'wow, lively and full of places to eat and shop, but, actually, it was pretty much full of souvenirs stand, a Jamie Oliver burger place – which is no big deal since London is packed with his restaurants – and some luxury shops who didn't seem inviting at all. So yeah, our passage there was a quick one.

The one thing we were really excited about was Camden Market. Along the strip with coloured houses and more souvenir shops, we found ourselves in the biggest and liveliest food market. There you could taste all kinds of international food and sweets – a lot of sweets. In fact, I couldn't resist and I had to buy myself this homemade oreo brownie... to die for!

And we could not miss the chance to have a five o'clock tea in London – it's a must! Right above the market, there was this charming tea house, YumChaa, where they had all kinds of teas and cakes (even a matcha cake!). We ordered the 'Hugs & Kisses' flavour – a very berry scented one – and enjoyed the quietness overlooking the madness.

Did you know Amy Winehouse was originally from Camden? Three years after her death, it was built a life-size statue of the singer at her best. Though I must say it feels so daunting to be next to a figure of someone who passed away – and not anyone, my idol.

Before he headed to the airport, we walked along Little Venice – a cute canal area with houses and boat and boat houses – who led us to Regent's Park.

Unfortunately, it was getting dark, and my flight hour was approaching, so we strolled for a few minutes around the empty park and headed to our final destination: King's Cross Station. Here, we viewed as the line to ride the cart through platform 9 3/4 getting longer. No time to take that iconic picture with the cart and the owl, though.

In the long 1-hour ride back to Heathrow, running up numerous flights of escalators panting and getting through a slow security, I almost missed my flight. Maybe it was a sign that I should've stayed, maybe, but because I did manage to fly that night, it meant that I had to go back to reality. But London, you bet you'll see me soon!

22 February 2017

A birthday spent in Notting Hill (& other parts of London)

[EN]: Our second day in London was on the 4th of February – my BIRTHDAY! The one (or three) thing(s) I was really excited to do was to go to this super instagrammable coffee shop – Farm Girl –, walk around pretty Notting Hill and stroll through London's beautiful parks.

This was the day I fell in love with London.

Now I have this huge dilemma: I don't know which city I like the most if Paris or London. They have such different vibes to them and, honestly, I'm drawn to both – as I can be romantic at times, and hustling in other, but always a pretty coffee lover.

A minha vida ficou completa! Okay, vida não, dia. O meu dia ficou completo!

It's on Instagram that I find the cutest coffee shops. It doesn't matter if it's in Paris, New York or Taiwan. I screenshot each and every one that appeals to me and hope that someday I have the chance to travel to one of those places just to go to that one coffee shop (or a doughnut shop, or matcha waffles, even cotton candy ice creams, it doesn't matter).

Farm Girl has been on my phone and hard drive for months – literally! It's impossible to double-tap and scroll down without clicking on the location and be mesmerised by this place's food promoting pictures. Their signature coffee is the rose latte – a 'double shot with rose water infused milk & petals'. Yes, it sounds fancy and tastes interesting. Nonetheless, I got to try it and photograph it. My life was complete! Okay, not life, my day. My day was complete!

And as it was my birthday, we went all out and ordered my favourite: brunch! We got the avocado toast with lemon juice, fresh coriander & a sprinkle of pomegranate (I added a poached egg for 2£!) and berry pancakes made with Benoit’s buckwheat mix with amber maple syrup, cranberries and hibiscus, sprinkled with toasted pistachio & hazelnut. By the end, I was so full but so happy! It was my birthday meal, the hell with the diet!

Next on our schedule was a visit Portobello Market. Unfortunately, it started raining. So we went a couple of meters down Portobello Road, got me a 'Notting Hill shopping bag', took some pictures of the coloured houses and headed back to Hyde Park.

Notting Hill and Chelsea are known for their cute perfect little-colored houses. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just browse through Pretty Little London or Georgina T Wong feeds and we'll be on the same page.

No meio dessas casas, fica o The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Among those houses, lays The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. A fine neighbourhood assembled with all-white little mansions. All so perfectly constructed one after the other creating a harmonious set. The perfect fit for posh people.

On our way to Hyde Park, we went through Kensington Palace Gardens – a huge private road where all the countries' embassies are placed. Monumental mansions one after the other, strict photograph rules and few people jogging.
Wandering along this road, it led us to the actual Kensington Gardens and Palace.

As we didn't have time to continue to Hyde Park, we decided to cut our way short and leave the huge dog-friendly park by the Royal Albert Hall exit.

In fact, though the metro, or the 'tube', is the most famous transportation in the city – it has 16 different lines that take you literally everywhere – I liked riding the bus the most. Not only they're such an icon to the city, but when you get that front seat on the top tier, it's like you're on top of the road and riding those bus tours (but only paying 1/10 of the price). Not to mention the turmoil it is when rush hour hits: hundreds of people crossing your way to change lines or to go up the three flights of the escalator.

It was on Sloane Square that I found a super clean vegetarian restaurant (clean in the design and on their food, of course). It's called Raw Press and, in fact, it charged me more than I thought it would – 16£ for a little plate and a green juice?

On this second day, we got to see the Big Ben in daylight! By looking at the British capital's majestic monument, it reminded me of that feeling I get when I see the Eiffel Tower and truly believe that I'm in Paris. It's that feeling of being alive, that tell us how worth it is to get out of our comfort zone and explore what we're so used to watching on screens.

A Trafalgar Square é outro must.

Trafalgar Square is another must. There are always tonnes of street artist performing or selling artisanal jewellery.

After our long walk through Big Ben, Parliament Street and Trafalgar Square, we went a bit further up and ended up at Leicester Street – a very busy street. Here's where all the theater and musicals gather together. Along with the M&Ms and LEGO massive store.

As we were so hungry by this time, we decided to try some overly priced Fish&Chips. The fish is fried fresh cod – which was okay with the mayo, since they never season anything –, though the fries were underdone...

After our early dinner, we passed by the lively Chinatown and got to the main square: Piccadilly Circus.

Our night ended on the sides of Regent Street: Carnaby Street. Here is where they have an amazing food court, 'Cahoons' – a disco replicating a 1940's old tube – and various stores (that were closed by the time we got there).
