moi: 2-DAY CITY GUIDE

MADRID. City of lights, love and life. Here you'll never be mistreated, you'll always be greeted and won't leave disappointed.

Having lived for 4 months in this huge city with so much to do all the time, I can pretty much claim knowing Madrid so well as my hometown, Lisbon. In the first month, I would go literally everywhere, to every touristic place and local cafés, and coming home completely exhausted from my daily 15 kms walk!
Now, with some nostalgia, I want to share with you the places that someone who has never been to Madrid has to visit!

MADRID. Cidade das luzes, amor e vida. Aqui nunca serás mal-tratado, serás sempre cumprimentado e não partirás desapontado.

Tendo vivido 4 meses nesta cidade gigante com tanta coisa para fazer a todo o tempo, posso afirmar que conheço Madrid tão bem como conheço a minha cidade natal, Lisboa. No primeiro mês, eu ia a todo o lado, incluindo sítios turísicos e cafés locais, e chegava a casa completamente exausta por ter andado diariamente 15 kms!

Agora, com muita saudade, quero partilhar convosco todos os sítios a que alguém que nunca foi a Madrid tem de visitar!

Day 1

The best way to start off a day is by having a nice cup of coffee with frothed milk (aka a cappuccino) in a cozy café. I summed up my favorite COFFEE SHOPS in Madrid, so your day can start right, right away.

A melhor maneira de começar o dia é bebendo uma chávena de café quente com leite emulsionado (conhecido como um cappuccino) num café confortável. Reuni os meus CAFÉS preferidos em Madrid para que o teu dia possa começar logo bem!

After being fueled up, in terms of caffeine, it's time to head to the biggest, fullest and liveliest avenue, GRAN VÍA, and go shopping! Don't forget to enter Europe's biggest Primark! Shops open at 10am, go early so you don't face angry crowds elbowing you to get to the register.

Depois de carregar as energias, em termos de cafeína, está na altura de enfrentar a maior, mais lotada e mais viva avenida, GRAN VÍA, e ir às compras! Não te esqueças de entrar na Primark maior da Europa! As lojas abrem às 10h, por isso vai cedo de modo a não teres de enfrentar as multidões furiosas cotovelando-te para chegar às caixas.

While you're here, go to the last floor at El Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience in Plaza del Calao and check out the panoramic view to the Vía and the Schweppes building. Either being in the sunlight or traffic light, it's amazing!

Já que estás por aqui, vai até ao El Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience na Plaza del Calao, e sobe até ao último andar para veres uma vista panorâmica da Vía. Seja com a luz do dia ou a luz do trânsito, é incrível!

Later on, when you start feeling weak from all of the shopping, head to Calle Fuencarral, a perpendicular street to Gran Vía, and walk till you find this little gastronomic market, the MERCADO SAN ILDEFONSO. Here you'll find every type of food (in tapas size) to please every taste. Tip: if you can go before 1pm, you'll ensure to get a seat to eat.

Mais tarde, quando já te estiveres a sentir fraca de tanto comprar, vai até à Calle Fuencarral, uma rua perpendicular à Gran Vía, e caminha até chegares a um pequeno mercado gastronómico, o MERCADO SAN ILDEFONSO. Aqui encontrarás todo o tipo de comida (em tamanho de tapas) que agradam qualquer gosto. Sugestão: se conseguires ir antes das 13h, ainda consegues arranjar lugar para sentar.

To burn calories, and see something more cultural, go back to Gran Vía, turn right (facing McDonald's) and go all the way down to PLAZA DE ESPAÑA. This is where you'll find the great statue of Don Quixote de La Mancha and his loyal companion, Sancho Panza.

Para queimar as calorias do almoço, e ver algo mais cultural, volta à Gran Vía, vira à direita (estando de frente para o McDonald's) e desce até à PLAZA DE ESPAÑA. Aqui encontrarás a grande estátua de Dom Quixote de La Mancha e o seu fiel companheiro, Sancho Pança.

The ROYAL PALACE and GARDENS are the next thing to experience. Either admiring it from the outside or exploring the inside, you'll be marveled anyways. And the two royal gardens that surround the palace are also an implication to feeling completely royal.

O PALÁCIO REAL e os seus JARDINS são o próximo local a experienciar. Admirando-o por fora ou explorando-o por dentro, de qualquer forma, encantar-te-á. E os dois jardins que o rodeiam são um passeio obrigatório para se sentir mesmo da realeza.

And to end the day in a peaceful state, you cannot miss the magical sunset at TEMPLE OF DEBOD. Here you'll witness Mother Nature's best show.

E para acabar o dia num estado total de paz, não se pode perder o pôr-do-sol mágico no TEMPLO DE DEBOD. Aqui vais testemunhar um dos melhores espectáculos da Mãe Natureza.

EXTRA: if you can manage to fit in, at the end of the day, a drink at a rooftop, then I suggest one of the two above: Plaza de Cibeles or Círculo de Bellas Artes (all near Gran Vía). It has a spectacular 360º view of the most central part of Madrid. A must!

EXTRA: se conseguires encaixar uma bebida num terraço ao fim do dia, então as minhas sugestões são as de cima: Plaza de Cibeles ou Círculo de Bellas Artes (todas perto da Gran Vía). Têm uma vista espectacular de 360º da zona mais central de Madrid. Imperdível!

DAY 2

On this second day, if there's nice weather, a morning walk, run or bike ride through the hugeness of the RETIRO PARK will cleanse your soul and give you strength to walk those 15 kms. Be sure to visit the CRYSTAL PALACE and ride the boat on the lake!

Neste segundo dia, se estiver bom tempo, uma caminhada, corrida ou passeio de bicicleta matinal pelo gigantesco PARQUE DEL RETIRO vai purificar a tua alma e dar-te forças para andar os tais 15 kms. Não te esqueças de visitar o PALÁCIO de CRISTAL e andar de barco no lago!

Now, if you're brave enough, from the Park you can walk straight to PLAZA DEL COLÓN to check out high-end stores, the national library and the square itself. If you're not brave, there's always the metro.

Agora, se fores corajosa suficiente, podes andar sempre me frente do parque até à PLAZA DEL COLÓN para ver lojas de luxo, a biblioteca nacional e a praça em si. Se não o fores, tens sempre o metro à tua disposição.

At this time, you'll be feeling hungry. So what about another market? This time, the most famous, crowded and pricey one, but definitely worth eating at. It's MERCADO DE SAN MIGUEL.

Por esta altura já deves estar a ficar com fome. E que tal outro mercado? Desta vez, o mais conhecido, mais cheio e mais carote, mas, definitivamente, um que vale muito a pena. É o MERCADO SAN MIGUEL.

And since PLAZA MAYOR is right next to the market, there's your next location to see.

E já que a PLAZA MAYOR é mesmo ao lado do mercado, essa poderá ser o próximo local a visitar.

Puerta del Sol is another famous square, where you can find the Apple Store, minions wanting to take a picture with you and lots of people selling lottery tickets. Further down, you'll find, hidden, Chocolatería San Ginés. In this centennial establishment, you'll have to try the most famous Spanish delicacy: chocolate con churros (fried, and not greasy, dough with a thick delicious chocolate drink).

Puerta del Sol é outra praça famosa, onde encontrarás a loja da Apple, minions a quererem tirar uma fotografia contigo e imensa gente a vender bilhetes da lotaria. Mais abaixo, encontrarás, escondida, a Chocolatería San Ginés. Neste estabelecimento centenário, tens de provar a famosa iguaria espanhola: chocolate con churros (massa frita, mas não gordurosa, com uma bebida deliciosa e densa de chocolate).
