With the rebirth of Cidadela in Cascais, the opening of a charity bookstore gives also a new life to books already read. Originated from the blog DEJÀ LU, the bookstore with the same name was inaugurated this February with the financial support of Pousadas de Cascais.
Right now, the bookstore has its own physical establishment - in Cidadela's Fortress, across the Pousada, and above the restaurant Taberna da Praça - and already has over 3.000 used and new books, donated by people who want to help with this initiative.

Cascais, abre uma livraria solidária que dá, também, uma nova vida a livros já
lidos. Proveniente do blog DEJÀ LU, a livraria intitulada com o mesmo nome foi inaugurada em Fevereiro deste ano com o apoio da Pousada de Cascais.
Tudo começou quando Francisca Prieto, autora do blog, começou a leiloar
livros usados e a reverter os lucros para a Associação Portuguesa
de Portadores de Trissomia 21, já que esta lhe era uma causa muito querida.
Neste momento, a livraria de estabelecimento físico – "na Fortaleza
da Cidadela de Cascais, defronte da Pousada, por cima do restaurante Taberna da
Praça” - já conta com mais de 3.000 livros usados e novos, doados por todos os que querem ajudar na iniciativa.
This Saturday, my mom took me there and it amazed me so! It's so well composed, with one room with books in foreign languages (where I bought “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz”, F. Scott Fitzgerald and “Bel Ami”, Guy Maupassant, only €2 each!) e another bigger room with books by Portuguese writers, South-American, philosophers, spiritualists, naughty, nutritionists... (and here I found two books published by Tinta da China, one entitled "Paris", Julien Green and the other entitled "Nova Iorque", Brendan Behan - each at €5). And you can quite lose yourself amongst those wine-boxes-type-of-shelves. What I always try to look for are those aged books, that somehow, make me happy to know they went through generations of readers (or were just waiting for me at some dirty shelf) to get to me completely intact.
I think this is such a fantastic idea, not only for its charity side, but also for this initiative of giving these books another home, because so many are forgotten between dusty corners and they are in need of being read again by another soul (yes, I personified the books, they have feelings too!).
No sabádo, a minha mãe levou-me a
conhecer o espaço e delirei! É uma livraria muito bem composta, com uma sala só
com livros internacionais (onde comprei o “The Diamond as Big as the
Ritz”, F. Scott Fitzgerald e “Bel Ami”, Guy
Maupassant, os dois a €2!) e outra sala maior com livros de autores
portugueses, sul-americanos, filósofos, espiritualistas, marotos, nutricionistas...
(onde comprei dois livros da editora Tinta da China, "Paris",
Julien Green e "Nova Iorque", Brendan Behan - €5
cada). E aqui quase que nos perdemos entre tantos livros emprateleirados em
caixas de vinho. O que tento sempre fazer é procurar livros antigos, porque de
alguma maneira dão-me uma certa alegria em saber que foram livros que foram
passados por gerações de leitores (ou que estavam só à minha espera numa
prateleira poeirenta) para chegar a mim completamente intactos.
Acho esta uma ideia fantástica, não só
pelo seu carácter solidário, mas como também pela iniciativa
de dar outra casa a livros, que muitas vezes são esquecidos em
cantos sujos e que precisam de ser lidos outra vez por outra alma (sim,
personifiquei os livros, eles também têm sentimentos!).
