New Year's Resolutions — are they a scam?

The other day... well, New Year's day, I was casually talking with my boyfriend about resolutions. In my family, every New Year's Eve, I remember my dad giving us a paper where we would write our promises for that year. For me, years later, those promises became goals I wanted to achieve for the following year. So, for me and my siblings, that tradition stuck.

Though, to my bf, New Year's Resolutions were a scam. In his mind, these promises people made about changing their lives, habits and everything they found to be wrong were utterly a lie. It was plain bullsh*t.

For him, the New Year's Resolutions worked like the famous meme: on the first day of the year, everybody goes to the gym, on the second day of the year, half of the people go, third day... none. So he doesn't believe that the common people truly resolutes what they thought of on the midnight's first strike.

I was quite surprised by his angry reaction to my question and tried to explain that, for me, New Year's Resolutions were about defining new goals for this upcoming year, both personal and professional, as well as travels I'd like to do.

In his defense, he said his intentions didn't change overnight. His way of thinking about life didn't change from the 31st of December to the 1st of January. For him, the new year is just a continuation from the previous. It's NOT a fresh start, nothing has really changed nor his reflections on his life.

It's so weird that someone has this perception of the New Year, because for me, New Year simbolizes a new start, a clean slate to do everything I ever wanted to do plus be a better me. Of course, no one changes completely overnight, but by the end of 2019, I'm sure that I'll feel like a different person: older, wiser and with more experiences to have learned from.

BALI — an Instagrammable travel guide

Before heading to Bali, I must say I've watched a good amount of Youtube videos and saved many Instagram images concerning where to go, what to do and where to eat.

In the 5 days we where there, I managed to go to a few places I had in mind, but I definitely want to go back and cross out my whole list (who knew Bali had such amazing coffee shops with delicious food and vegan concepts?).

It's indeed an island with a lot to do and I would recommend staying there for at least 1 full week so you can have time to sightsee everything plus hop to other islands AND relax.

My list covered the entire island and a few islands on the coast. Here it is:

1 — KUTA

Kuta is the closest place to the Denpasar airport, and from my research, it's not worth stopping by due to being too touristy.

2 — SEMINYAK

Right above Kuta, is one of the best places to stay in Bali — Seminyak. It's the area with the cutest coffee shops, two of the most famous Beach Clubs — Potato Head & Ku De Ta— and a black sand beach where you can learn how to surf.

Some of the coffee shops I had on my list were: Nalu bowls, Kind community, Coffee Cartel, and Caffe Organic.

There are tons of luxury spas and hotels and more affordable villas. You have the beach really close by, but you'll find many tourists.

Kynd Community — a plant-based coffee shop. I absolutely fell in love with their pink wall and food photos on IG, but it's a bit pricey.  We tried two "love mugs" — the matcha latte with coconut milk and the pink latte with beetroot and vanilla which I found to be super sweet for me.

We also ordered their "paradise pancakes" which were good but not delicious. Maybe because they were vegan and had a different recipe than I'm used to.

The avocado toast was really good — my mom says. But the poached egg we asked for wasn't really an egg because... plant-based has no animal food. So... a bit weird.

One thing that never disappoints it's the açaí bowl and this one even had BALI spelled out in mango. DELISH!

Cafe Organic — this French-owned coffee shop was literally 2 minutes away from our hotel, so we went there at least 2 times. We would wake up so early because of our jet lag, that we would be standing at 7 AM at their doors waiting to open (it opens at 7AM).

My absolute favorites were the dragon fruit bowls and avocado toast.

3 — CANGGU

Twenty minutes by car from Seminyak, we arrive at Canggu. The hipster place in Bali. This place is ruled by youngsters, surfers, Aussies, and coffee-lovers. This would be a great place to stay at too. If I could, I would stay 2 days in Seminyak and 2 days in Canggu.

Coffee places to go here are The Loft & The Avocado Factory (which I went to none because we only were in Canggu for one day).

The best sunsets are the La Laguna and at The Lawn.

The most fun Beach Club in this area is called Finn's Beach Club — there is music, pools, food, young people, drinks, and the ocean. You'll have a blast there!

4 — UBUD

One of the most incredible Nature places in Bali is called Ubud. It's a long one-hour drive on the left side of their roads between touristic vans, big buses, and tiny scooters. But, it is so worth it.

What do you have in Ubud (the interior side of Bali):

— the beautiful rice fields in Tegalalang (the best time to be awed is by sunrise when there are few people there)

— the Bali swings in these rice fields or near

— the famous cat poop coffee, which after trying it and crossing out of my list I began to think how cruel it is to force these animals to eat the coffee seeds and poop them out for money, literally, so maybe don't do it!

— the Ubud Market with the most unique wooden bags and food

— and the Monkey Jungle

— if you have the time, also visit the Tegenungan Waterfall (Bali is known for the waterfalls, and this one is not that known so it won't be crowded like the others)

5 — DJIMBARAN

Let me put it this way: THE BEST SUNSET OF THE ISLAND!

Head to Jimbaran beach and you'll have a mile-long view of the early sunset. With tons of people watching it with you.

6 — ULUWATU

Uluwatu is located on the lower side of the Island. You see the airport? It's below that. Here you can surf, stay at a Cliff Top Resort and visit the Temples. 

Bali is such a religious island — Hindu, the religion that has over 33 million gods and at its core is a very peaceful religion. At every house, there is a home temple plus all the big ones they constructed to pray in a group.

The temple we went to is called Pura Luhur Uluwatu. It is on a cliff so you get this amazing view over the Indian Ocean.

One funny thing I read before entering the temple is that women on their period cannot visit it... and you have to wear their cloth if you aren't wearing a piece of clothing that covers your knees and legs. Also, there are monkeys there that still your things, so beware!

7 - GILI ISLANDS

The last place we visited was the Gilli Trawangan or Gili T — one of three islands composing the Gili islands on the northwest of the Lombok Island.

From Seminyak, there is a long 1 and a half hour drive to Padang Bai where you catch the boat and navigate for 3 hours to the island. If you go in the morning, it's a very pleasant boat drive, especially if you go up on the deck, soak up the sun (don't forget to put on sunscreen!), listen to the pop music they play, enjoying a Bintang Radler beer at 10 AM while viewing the little islands you pass by.

Gili T is the first island you arrive, the other two are Gili Meno and Gili Air. And then you have Lombok. 

Gili T was a true surprise. So there aren't any roads or cars. The only transportation methods are either donkey pulled cars, scooters or bikes. The water is the clearest I've ever seen and the sand is a light yellow. It's a true paradise!

BALI — an Instagrammer's paradise (or is it?)

Oh Bali! The Instagram destination of 2018. An Instagrammer paradise. But is it all that pretty and edited?

I never thought I would go to Bali this soon. It always felt like a distant trip. But I'm so lucky to have a father that does business with the Asian countries, being Indonesia one of them.

It's weird how I've always heard of Bali from my Dad, but never really knew what it meant... until Instagram came along. The raw nature, the clear water, the peaceful religion, the coffee shops. Everything you would want on a tiny island.

Summer of 2018 was the year to visit this unknown-known destination.

The thing with traveling accounts on Instagram and the actual traveling is quite a mind trick. When you're scrolling down on your feed filled with travel couple accounts, top destinations and so on, you can get a feeling that, after a long time seeing the same destination over and over, you already know what to expect there.

You are aware of the tourist traps, you have saved a few insta façades of the places, and you know exactly where to have the best pancakes in town. 

In a way, it facilitates A LOT on your destination research or even on your cluelessness when getting to some place. BUT THE THING IS... nothing is truly a surprise, nothing is new to you. For me, when I get to an Instagram place, on the one hand I'm happy to have found it, but one the other I feel some kind of familiarity on a place I've never been to. It takes out the element of surprise, and in some cases, it disappoints us — because we're headed there with this idea that it's an amazing place, really bright and colourful and with no one there, and once you get to the place you see that it is dull and crowded.

That's my thought on Instagrammble destinations...

Somewhat, it describes my trip to Bali. I knew everything that I wanted to see, and I was aware of the pretty perfect picture of Bali, but I was not prepared for what was outside of the frame.

The smells, the (spicy and mushy) food, the crowds, the telephone wires hanging everywhere, the traffic jam, the amount of hours it takes you to get to the other side of the island because there's no highway.

But also I wasn't prepare for the extreme caring trait of the Indonesians in Bali — they are always happy to see you, to serve you —, for the amazing coffee shops developed by foreigners, for the vast raw nature you have in the middle of the island, for the adjacent islands that have the most clear water I've seen, for the freshly harvest young coconuts (they're so delicious!). 

It was a true culture clash. I've never been outside of Europe and North America, and to see such poverty and extreme luxury together is... upsetting. Plus the whole edited version versus the real version of a destination... just unreal.

HALLOWEENING

Chegámos ao mês dedicado ao dia tradicional americano: o Halloween, ou Dia das Bruxas.

Sim, é no final de Outubro, mas parece que estamos todo o mês a planear para a grande noite de sustos. Em Portugal, tenho notado que só há uns 4 anos para cá é que começámos a dar mais importância ao Halloween: os vizinhos dos prédios já estam preparados com doces para o "doçura ou travessura", os bares no Bairro Alto já ficam mais decorados e com bebidas especiais de Bruxas e as pessoas, nesta noite, já vão mascaradas e sem vergonha para a rua. É um ambiente bem animado!

Com este dia em mente, e por estar a gerir a conta da Hueyras, a marca portuguesa de coroas de flores, sugeri à criadora da marca fazermos uma sessão de Dia de los Muertos com coroas especiais de Halloween.

É uma marca tão versátil. Tanto dá para completar os looks das noivas no seu casamento, como das meninas das alianças, como em sessões de maternidade, em festivais, e, agora, para este dia assustador.

Este foi o resultado final. Foi a querida Carolina Santiago que nos fotografou e eu fiquei de boca aberta com a sua pós-produção. A miúda é tão talentosa!

The Sweet Art Museum

Há muito que já tinha sido anunciado: um museu de doces! E finalmente abriu as suas portas domingo passado, dia 31 de Maio.

Há quem possa pensar que é um museu só para crianças, mas enganam-se. Eu, uma jovem adulta, diverti-me bem mais do que as crianças. Porque este mundo encantado dos doces não só nos faz esquecer as preocupações do nosso dia-a-dia, como nos põe num estado de felicidade extrema, igual à das crianças que são sempre despreocupadas e, assim, felizes.

Existem 5 salas de perder a cabeça. A visita começa logo com um mergulho numa piscina de marshmallows (calma, não são verdadeiros, mas as esponjas que o imitem parecem um abraço forte e fofo quando se está rodeado destes), de seguida passamos para a sala dos gelados gigantes (onde nos dão mesmo um gelado de baunilha), a sala das gomas de ursinhos gigantes fazem-nos sentir pequenos e gulosos. Ainda há um carrossel rosa, um unicórnio em tamanho real, uma banheira de bolas coloridas e um baloiço nas nuvens. 

É a meia hora mais feliz que vais passar. Eu não conseguia esconder a minha emoção e adorei a experiência de poder voltar a ser uma criança feliz rodeada de doces gigantes, unicórnios e boa disposição.

Se ainda não tens programa para este fim-de-semama, recomendo mesmo a visitares este museu mágico e a esquecerem-se de todas as tarefas por, pelo menos, meia hora.

Os 15 sítios mais Instagrammable em Barcelona

Long time, no see!

Olá a todos! É verdade, ando bem desaparecida aqui do blog... mas a verdade é que ando a focar-me cada vez mais no Instagram e no Youtube.

Quem me segue nestas duas plataformas, sabe que há uma semana, eu e a Mariana Galhardas, fomos numa bloggers trip até Barcelona — uma cidade que nenhuma das duas tinha ainda explorado.

Quando se organiza uma viagem deste género, ou seja, muito turismo misturado com uma boa dose de fotografias Instagrâmicas, é preciso estudar a cidade a fundo. É fazer álbuns no Instagram, umas semanas antes, com todas as fotografias que outras bloggers tiraram para saber os melhores spots onde ir, é ler blog posts e ver vídeos sobre viagens parecidas e tirar notas e, sobretudo, planear os outfits de acordo com cada lugar.

Foram 4 dias de viagem (se quiserem ver como foi cada dia, carreguem AQUI). Conseguimos ver a cidade perfeitamente em 3 dias e no último andámos mais a passear descontraidamente.

1. O monumento mais conhecido de Barcelona é, sem dúvida, a Catedral em construção há quase 150 anos por Gaudí — La Sagrada Familia. Entrar é um must (paga-se 7 euros por uma visita livre), mas o mais impressionante é mesmo a vista monumental da parte de fora da igreja.

Dica: entre a Plaça de Gaudí e a entrada principal, no passeio, há uns bancos de pedra. Põe-te em pé neles e tira uma fotografia a olhar para a Igreja. Deste modo, vais conseguir captar todo o monumento (nunca cortes as torres) e ainda posicionar-te na fotografia.

2. Ao visitar Barcelona, vais reparar que a cidade foi basicamente toda construída por um só arquitecto — Anton Gaudí. Uma das mais incríveis casas que Gaudí construiu foi a Casa Batlló. Esta casa é completamente fora do normal: não há linhas direitas, é uma casa fluída, baseada na natureza, no mar e no esqueleto humano. Tem uma arquitectura orgânica e parece ter sido criada em mente de uma realidade alternativa.

Dica: Em vez de tirares uma fotografia em frente à casa, opta por escolher uma das esquinas. Deste modo, conseguirás mostrar com mais evidência as texturas da casa.

3. No mesmo passeio — Passeio da Gràcia — encontras a segunda casa construída por Gaudí. Desta vez, esta representa as 4 forças da Terra, mantendo as mesmas linhas de uma arquitectura orgânica.

Dica: este foi o sítio onde mais dificuldade encontrámos para tirar fotografias. Havia muitas pessoas e muitas sombras. Optei por simplesmente sentar-me ao pé de uma das chaminés/guerreiros protectores e resultou bastante bem. Consegui mostrar os mosaicos característicos e, mesmo assim, conseguir uma fotografia simples e imitável.

4. O Passeio de Grácia é onde vai encontrar as duas casas anteriormente referidas. É um dos sítios mais movimentados, mas tem bancos de pedra super giros e icónicos da cidade Barcelona.

5. Uma parede que se tornou bastante popular nas publicações que encontrávamos no Instagram foi o mural dos beijos na Praça D'Isidre Nonell. Andámos um bocado às voltas para a encontrar, mas uma vez que a vimos, esquecemos a frustração.

Dica: Para dar dimensão à parede, posiciona-te no primeiro terço do mural (para também não tapares a parte mais importante) e tira a fotografia ligeiramente de lado — não totalmente de frente.

6. Ainda no mesmo lugar da Sagrada Família, existem dois parques de cada lado. O mais bonito é sem duvida a Praça de Gaudí. É daqui que se consegue ver a Catedral no seu todo e ainda ter a beleza da Natureza a enquadrá-la.

Dica: descobre um banco à volta do lago e senta-te. O que notei nas fotografias que tirei nesta viagem foi que as fotos em que estava sentada foram as que tiveram mais engagement.

7. Agora passando para pontos mais altos da cidade. Os Bunkers são IMPERDÍVEIS! É aqui que a vista é a mais brutal da cidade e, ainda por cima, é grátis! Está a uma caminhada rápida de 20 minutos desde o Park Güell. É de lá de cima que se consegue ver cada ponto icónico da cidade. Se estiver bom tempo, então é perfeito. Leva uma bebida e um snack e ficas lá a apanhar sol, a apreciar a vista e a ouvir música.

Dica: Aqui há bastantes sítios para se fotografar, qualquer um tem a vista brutal que vai atrair os teus seguidores. Eu decidi-me por me sentar (outra vez) numa rampa e casualmente olhar para a vista. Resultou bastante bem e não me pus em perigo!

8. Uma fotografia da Emitaz que me chamou bastante a atenção foi neste mesmo lugar — o Museu Nacional D'Art de Catalunya. Ela estava com um vestido lindo preto, a fonte atrás jorrava água e o céu estava limpo. Neste dia, a fonte estava fechada, o céu estava nublado, mas mesmo assim ainda tentei ir na vibe do vestido comprido e usei este conjunto da Loavies com umas calças compridas e fluídas. Este dia tinha sido bastante cansativo, por isso a minha cara não está a melhor, mas sei que fiz jus à sua inspiração.

9. Outra das grandes atrações de Barcelona é o Park Güell. Um parque-cidade encomendado pelo mecenas Güell que tinha como objetivo construir 40 casas e criar uma quinta fechada para os mais ricos, mas que acabou por ser um fracasso. Hoje é um parque gigante, com muitas árvores e alguns pontos de interesse. Não fiquei mega impressionada, pois pensava que era mais mágico. De qualquer forma, o must é tirar uma fotografia nestes bancos infinitos coloridos. Desta vez, foi bastante turístico e pouco artístico devido à grande enchente de turistas no local.

Dica: compra os bilhetes online e marca para a hora com menos pessoas, geralmente às 8:30 ou às 19:30. Aí poderás andar pelo jardim e explorar sem distrações.

10. Uma fotografia pouco vista nos feed das grandes bloggers que vieram a Barcelona é no Palácio da Música. Talvez por ser menos turístico e menos conhecido do que os grandes monumentos da cidade, no entanto é definidamente outro sítio a não perder. Custa 11€ e tem uma visita guiada obrigatória de 45 minutos (que passam a voar). O sítio mais giro de todo o palácio, além da grande sala de concerto, é este corredor com colunas de mosaicos coloridos e toda a vibe quente.

Dica: centra-te no corredor e pede que te tirem a fotografia de baixo, assim vais parecer tão alta quanto as colunas.

11. Os jardins dos cactus. Foi assim que decorámos. Quem vem da Praça de Drassanes encontra a encosta do Parque Montjüic. É um jardim de entrada livre e com imensas espécies de cactus. Um paraíso para quem adora plantas suculentas.

Dica: encontra um spot onde consigas rodear-te com os cactus mais altos, deste modo vai parecer que estás fora de Barcelona e num sítio tropical.

12. O Arco do Triunfo de Barcelona é quase uma réplica idêntica ao de Paris. No entanto, é mais pequeno e em tons de laranja escuro. Dá uma vibe bem quente à cidade. O Arco marca a entrada do Passeig de Lluís Companys que termina no Parque da Ciutadella.

Dica: Aqui, para se tirar fotografias, ou se opta por estar directamente no meio, ou de lado. O arco é grande e tem sempre muita gente, por isso também recomendo ir-se a uma hora a que estejam menos pessoas (ao nascer do sol, por exemplo).

13. O Parc da Ciutadella tem várias atracções, como o lago e os barcos a remo, um elefante gigante e a Cascada Monumental, entre outros. Foi nesta última que optámos posar. O truque é conseguir apanhar a cascata toda e, ao mesmo tempo, tornármo-nos no centro de foco.

14. Ah, a Barceloneta! É mítica quase. Mas, na verdade, é apenas um passeio gigante que une as várias praias da costa da Cataluña.

Dica: o que vimos foram bastantes pessoas a fotografar com o passeio, as palmeiras e o W Hotel Barcelona — o edifício que parece uma vela gigante de metal ou vidro. Fica bastante tropical com um toque de cidade. A Mariana tirou uma de pé no meio do passeio enquanto que eu decidi sentar-me, para variar.

15. E por último, um achado do Instagram — o terraço do Hotel Ayre Rosselló. A duas ruas da Sagrada Família encontra-se este hotel escondido. Mas quem fez o seu trabalho de casa, sabe que é neste hotel que se pode admirar a melhor vista da cidade.

Dica: pede uma bebida e sobe até ao topo. Se estiver bom tempo, fica numa espreguiçadeira a apanhar sol. Antes de sair, tira a icónica fotografia com a Catedral de fundo. É tiro e queda para uma foto com um engagement brutal.

5 things you need before traveling to the US (from Europe)

Before heading to the big American Continent, in this case, the Northern side, there are a few things you need in order to be admitted in the country and prepared for the country's differences.

Here's a list of everything you need:

1. When traveling to another continent, your European Citizen Card is not enough. Schedule an appointment with your national citizen department to make your International Passport. For the Portuguese, schedule online your appointment on the Portal do Cidadão website. The cost for the Portuguese passport is 65€ and it takes about a week to be ready.

2. After picking the passport up, head to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website and sign up for an E.S.T.A. (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). This is the most important document — without it, you can't enter the US. Be prepared to give out all of your info — full name, passport number, US address, US contact person, etc. It costs 14$ (11€). It also takes about a week to be accepted and processed and it allows you to stay in the US for 90 days straight. Once you're approved, your ESTA remains valid for a period 2 years.
Have it printed out and ready to be taken with you on the airport - they'll not ask for it at the security check, but it's important that you bring it. 

3. If you have a credit or debit card that only works in your country and that, probably, will charge you for every transaction in foreign countries, I have a solution. Download the free Revolut app and ask for their card (it costs only 6€). This card enables you to pay and withdraw money without ever paying extra. It's also great to transfer money to another person who has a Revolut account. It works by sending the money immediately through his/hers telephone number. Also, having a Visa card in the States works best at every facility — especially at your hotel when they ask for a credit card to hold the deposit fee.

4. Now that you have your two most important documents with you to enter the country, and have a card to pay all your expenses, it is time to book your trip. The first thing I did what checking the best rates for the flights and hotel stays. With the travel dates in mind, I searched for Google flights and simulated all possible trips — being one day earlier or later, in the morning or at night. Then I headed to Edreams (also try Booking.com or Expedia, or Momondo — the one who offers you the best deal) and book the flights. For the hotel, we got our best deal at Hotels.com.

5. Lastly: a power plug adapter. The standard EU power plug won't work in the US — neither will the UK one. You have to buy a US one. Without it, you'll be crying because all the battery in your phone will die and you'll have nowhere to charge it. So be prepared!
